Boris Borisovich Damaskin (1932-2019), right in the photo, and Oleg Aleksandrovich Petrii (1937-2021), headed the Dept successively after Frumkin, during 1976-1998 and 1998- 2008 periods. They were uniquely friendly to each other, despite (or because of?) essentially different research style and favorite topics. They co-authored, jointly or separately, many important Frumkin’s articles, and also wrote a number of textbooks.
Their complete lists of publications are available in jubilee special issues published in 2003 (Damaskin) and in 2008 (Petrii). All later articles are available in the international databases. Their last joint publication (2011) is the historical review on the ‘double layer’ concepts.

A number of their rarely available articles published in Russian are collected below (translated versions). Their joint photos can be found at the end of this page.
Nikolaeva-Fedorovich N.V., Damaskin B.B. Effect of the radius of base electrolyte cations on the reduction of persulfate anion on a mercury electrode // In: Soviet Electrochemistry (Proceedings of the fourth conference on electrochemistry), Consultant Bureau: NY, 1961. V. 1. P. 183-190. This publication (Damaskin’s diploma work) contains very rare data on cation-dependent temperature effect on peroxodisulfate reduction, with qualitatively different effects of Na+ and Cs+ (positive and negative apparent activation energies, respectively). Possible explanation is the destruction of interfacial Cs+*S2O82- ion pairs responsible for faster reaction rate in presence of Cs+. Translation of 1956 conference presentation is published with 5-year delay.

Joint photos of Boris Damaskin and Oleg Petrii are numerous, here is a small selection from various periods. Photo in the centrum shows presentation of the “Frumkin portrait by Picasso” (1965). Photos in the lower raw are collected during less formal Department meetings, where they always were singing some joke songs.
