
Electrochemistry in Moscow University had been started at the Faculty of Physics and Math, long before the Faculty of Chemistry was established in 1919. Department of electrochemistry was officially opened in 1933, as headed by A.N. Frumkin. The precursor of Department was the Laboratory of technical electrochemistry started in 1929.
Department of electrochemistry was initially located in the Moscow centrum, and moved to the ground floor of the Faculty of Chemistry at Vorob’uevy Gory in 1953. There was only one person who started during pre-Frumkin period, and continued with Frumkin for many years: Zinovyi A. Iofa, who taught the vast majority of experimental electrochemists in 1930s – 1960s.
