History of Electrochemistry

Co-authors (1941-1957)

Many people from Frumkin’s division in the Institute of Physical Chemistry later joined the Institute of Electrochemistry. Here, we mention only those co-authors whose work with Frumkin took place in the Institute of Physical Chemistry exclusively.

Tatyana Aleksandrovna Kryukova (1906-1987) graduated from the Institute of Fine Chemical Technologies (which originated from Higher Women’s Courses, and was named the 2nd Moscow Univ during her period). Then she worked in The Institute of Fertilizers and Insectofungicides, where her PhD thesis on the flammability of red phosphorous was completed. She got some polarographic experience before WWII, and worked on polarographic topics in the Insitute of Physical Chemistry in 1944-1953 (1953 DSc thesis on polarographic maxima). Later she was affiliated with the Institute of Power Sources. Her 1959 book “Polarographic analysis” (with S.I. Sinyakova and T.V. Aref’eva, in Russian) is a classical reference in the field.

Vigen Iosifovich Melik-Gaikazyan (1920-2023) arrived at the Institute of Physical Chemistry as PhD student in 1946 from Yerevan (Armenia), where he graduated from Yerevan University in 1944 and worked in the local institute for a couple of years. Under the supervision of P.I. Dolin, he studied adsorption of organic substances on mercury, and his article with Frumkin on the application of ac polarization to the studies of adsorption kinetcs is widely known. After the PhD defence (1950) he continued working in various technical universities in Tomsk (1951-1968), Kemerovo (1968-1976), and Kursk (1976-2017). His scientific activities shifted to flotation, with the focus on adsorption effects (DSc thesis, 1966).

In album of Frumkin’s collaborators, there is also Sofia Azar’evna Rozentsv[zw]eig. She was active in battery research and especially known for her works on iron-nickel batteries. Her name is mentioned in the context of early alkaline battery research and development in respect to the joint work with Saratov battery plant. According to the available information, she was affiliated with the Battery Institute (Leningrad), so we can only assume that she had contacts with Frumkin team and visited them systematically.
